Read To Lead

WHAT. Read To Lead is an innovative reading program that pairs volunteer Learning Coaches with struggling readers for one-on-one virtual reading coaching. Read To Lead utilizes technology and personal intervention to assess the student’s reading capability and help them to reach or exceed grade-level reading proficiency and comprehension standards.

WHY. Unfortunately, there is a strong correlation between low literacy and incarceration. In fact, third graders who are not proficient in reading are statistically slated for prison. Our goal is to close the literacy and achievement gap in underserved youth and leverage Read To Lead as a tangible prison-prevention measure.

HOW. If you know of a student who struggles to read or if you would like to volunteer as a Learning Coach, contact us today at 301-464-7305 for assistance.

By the end of the third grade, students who are not proficient in reading, are statistically slated for prison.

From K4 to 3rd grade, children are “learning to read.” From 4th grade on, students are “reading to learn.”

There is in fact a strong connection between early low literacy skills and our country’s exploding incarceration rates.

High school dropouts are 3.5 times for likely than high school graduates to be arrested in their lifetime.

The Department of Justice states, “The link between academic failure and delinquency, violence, and crime is welded to reading failure.

85 percent of all juveniles who interface with the juvenile court system are functionally low literate.
